Envestors’ Budget summary: 8 things affecting private investors and scale-up tech companies

Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced his budget on Wednesday, 3 March. Overall, not a bad budget to stimulate investment into early-stage high growth companies and the investors which support them.

The Future Fund’s “Breakthrough Fund” is launching in early Summer 2021, which is a new £375m match-fund scheme encouraging private investors to co-invest with government in high-growth innovative firms. “We have lost too many tech scale-ups from the UK due to the lack of sufficient growth funding” Jenny Tooth OBE, UKBAA. However, match investment is via convertible loan notes (CLNs) which is incompatible with the EIS and SEIS, making this more relevant for international investors, larger family offices and non-EIS funds
