Future Forward: UKBAA Investment Summit Day 1 explored the Future of Finance
Future Forward: UKBAA Investment Summit took place across three days (24th – 26th November) online last week. Packed with panels, keynotes, roundtables, pitching sessions and more, Future Forward saw more than 750 people from across our ecosystem in attendance and it was sponsored by Gold Sponsor JPIN Venture Catalysts Ltd and Silver Sponsor InvestUK.
The first day focussed on the Future of Finance. In the wake of The Future of Growth Capital Report that identified a £15 billion equity gap across the UK annually needed to rebuild the investment supply chain and build economic recovery, the day explored the existing structural imbalances in the investment market and reviewed what the future of finance will look like.
Following an introduction to the day from UKBAA CEO Jenny Tooth OBE, British Business Bank CEO Catherine Lewis La Torre delivered a keynote where she spoke about the challenges likely to be faced by the investment industry over the coming years. She also outlined how British Business Bank is responding to them.
The day’s second keynote came from Irene Graham OBE, CEO and Board Director at ScaleUp Institute. Taking attendees through the key findings of The Future of Growth Capital report and the latest ScaleUp review, Irene talked passionately about what needs to be done to address the access to finance gap in order to support scaling businesses across the UK.
Rounding out the first half of the day was British Patient Capital CEO Judith Hartley with her talk ‚’How Patient Capital will support the UK recovery’. Judith emphasised the importance of Patient Capital and how it would be able to support the long-term growth of businesses in the UK. She also explained what needs to be done to address the current equity gap and support economic recovery by building an effective supply of Patient Capital.
In the afternoon, the first panel of Future Forward took place, ‘Industry’s response to COVID-19 and what changes are afoot for the future’. The speakers on the panel were Innovate Finance CEO Charlotte Crosswell, BVCA Deputy Director General Gurpreet Manku, UK Finance Managing Director, Commercial Finance and UKBAA Director Stephen Pegge, and Beringea LLP Managing Partner Stuart Veale. During the course of the panel, they explored the impact of the pandemic and how the investment industry responded to it to support access to finance for their portfolio companies. They also looked ahead to what short and long-term measures would be needed to redress the equity gap and support economic recovery.
The Future of Finance came to an end with a closed roundtable that looked at The Future of Venture Capital and Angel Investing. Key members of the venture capital and angel community came together to discuss the models that will be effective to build and grow VC and angel investment capacity across the UK. They also talked about what more the government needs to do to support the investment community in the future.
