The Early-Stage Investment Summit - London
London March 2026 Highlights
Keynotes
Liz Bailey, British Business Bank shared how the British Business Bank is evolving its role from a capital provider to a builder of future fund managers. Highlighting the £400m Investor Pathways initiative, she emphasised how widening access to investment opportunities can help individuals from diverse backgrounds launch VC funds and build track records. Her keynote reinforced a clear message: increasing investor diversity is one of the most effective ways to unlock funding for underrepresented founders.
Scott O’Brien, Innovate UK offered a forward-looking preview of Innovate UK’s next three-year plan, signalling a significant new phase for public innovation funding. Drawing on his experience deploying patient capital and leveraging private investment, he outlined how upcoming funding commitments will create new opportunities for collaboration between public and private sectors. His keynote encouraged investors and founders alike to pay close attention to how these changes will shape the funding landscape over the next 12 months.
Miraj Mistry, Beauhurst, delivered a data-rich snapshot of the UK early-stage investment landscape, grounded in insights from Beauhurst. He highlighted a notable rise in first-time deals, driven in part by the rapid growth of AI, while questioning whether other sectors can maintain the same momentum. His session provided a clear, evidence-based view of where capital is flowing and how investor behaviour is evolving in a shifting market.
Panels
David Foreman and Paul Munn shared a candid look inside the merger of Praetura and Par Equity to form PXN Group, one of the most significant developments in the UK early-stage investment landscape.
They highlighted how scale, collaboration, and a shared long-term vision are central to building a stronger regional investment platform, while emphasising the importance of cultural alignment and openness in making a merger successful. The discussion also underscored a balanced, founder-focused approach to investment, signalling a more connected and ambitious future for early-stage capital across the UK.
Our panel featuring Beverley Gower-Jones OBE FEI, Simon Blakey, Chris Elphick and Chris Adelsbach explored one of the most critical stages in a startup’s journey: the transition from angel backing to institutional investment.
The panel highlighted how stronger alignment between early and later-stage investors, from metrics tracking and governance readiness to valuation discipline, is essential to unlocking successful scale-ups, with a clear message that the bar for performance continues to rise.
Alongside this, they reinforced the vital role angels play beyond capital, particularly in building relationships and making introductions that position founders for future rounds.
Rounding out the day, Katie Lockwood, Riam Kanso, Dania Saadeh, RJ Hoskins and Mads Jensen shared practical insights on investing in one of the fastest-moving and most complex areas of the market: artificial intelligence.
The discussion highlighted the balance between extraordinary opportunity and heightened risk, with investors stressing the importance of understanding market dynamics, regulatory exposure and technical defensibility before deploying capital.
A clear takeaway for angel investors was the need to identify their unique edge and act with conviction, while remaining disciplined in how they assess risk in an evolving AI landscape.
