Sustainable Accelerator 4 makes new investments into Tend, Junee and 2Hand
Sustainable Ventures is pleased to announce that it has made three new investments from its Sustainable Accelerator 4 fund. The investee companies are early-stage high growth sustainability start-ups that focus on addressing the challenges of climate change and resource scarcity.
Tend is an online farmers managed marketplace, enabling farmers to sell fresh produce directly to consumers. It also provides the associated farm to fork collection and delivery logistics. Tend’s service significantly reduces food wastage, which currently accounts for around 8% of annual global greenhouse gas emissions, as farmers harvest to order every week. The company is led by James Lamming, CEO and Founder. With this fundraising round, Tend will develop the marketplace by adding more logistics functionality and enhancing the ability for consumers to connect with farmers while also increasing the team size and marketing activities. Sustainable Accelerator invested £135k in a total round of £369k alongside angel co-investors.
Junee is building a borrow-and-return system of reusable takeaway packaging. Junee aims to partner with corporates, initially targeting employees for their workday lunch. Employees can borrow Junee bowls from restaurants for free and return them at convenient return points within their office. Junee aims to significantly cut down on unnecessary single-use plastic packaging use and waste via their circular system. Junee is led by Mary Liu (COO) who was Head of Logistics Strategy at HelloFresh and Caroline Williams (CEO) who was a Senior Consultant at Deloitte. Both founders have an MBA from London Business School. With this funding round, in addition to implementing its marketing strategy, Junee will scale up its team with a CTO, as well as personnel to support operations, restaurant partnerships, and technology. Sustainable Accelerator invested £125k in a total round of £250k alongside angel co-investors.
2Hand is a second-hand market aggregation platform; essentially a search engine for second-hand items across second-hand marketplaces such as eBay, Gumtree, and OnBuy. 2Hand aims to reduce waste and consumption of resources by making second-hand goods items more accessible and cost-efficient. 2Hand is led by Jo Spolton (CEO) and Sam Turner (CMO). Jo previously set up a second-hand marketplace which morphed into 2Hand and also spent 10 years as a professional sailor (in the British team!). Sam is a senior marketing professional with experience at Prudential, Teamspirit, VCCP and McCarthy & Stone. With this funding round, 2Hand will expand its software development team, build a Shopify app and other platform functionalities, and ramp up its marketing spend through a mix of channels (e.g. paid social media, search engine optimisation (SEO) and digital displays). Sustainable Accelerator invested £195k into 2Hand.
