MBM Commercial strengthens US Practice

MBM Commercial (“MBM”), an award-winning law firm with offices in London and Edinburgh, has strengthened the firm’s US Practice with admission of Alexander Lamley to the New York Bar. With Lamley’s addition to the team, the firm now has five US lawyers based on the ground in Edinburgh – a rare offering for clients.

With more companies looking to expand their global footprint to the United States, as well as inward investment coming from the US, MBM’s US Practice offers locally-based, dual-qualified UK and US qualified lawyers for its business clients. Covering corporate law, intellectual property, data privacy, contract law and US immigration the team can advise on all aspects of US expansion.

“The US market is the most valuable country for Scottish exports, at £5.5 billion, and Scotland is the most attractive location outside of London for foreign direct investment,” explained Tracey Ginn, US and UK Corporate Partner and Head of the US Team, “when looking to do business in the US, how an organization structures, staffs and incorporates can have huge implications for liability, tax, and costs. Over the last year we have seen increased demand for our US practice and have advised on several high value investment and M&A transactions. With Alex’s admission to the New York Bar, we offer a US practice unparalleled in Scotland, with no other firm able to provide dual qualified attorneys as members of the locally-based team.”

Alexander began working towards his qualification in early 2019, studying over weekends and doing 50 hours of pro bono work. He made two trips to the US to sit exams, the latter trip happening when the first pandemic lockdown hit in 2020, and just managed to get back home on the last direct flight before the US closed its border to Europe. The New York bar exam had a passing rate of just 40% in 2020.

Tracey is a GlobalScot and practised law for 14 years in California at national US firm Polsinelli, an AmLaw 100 firm before returning to Scotland to set up MBM’s US practice. The rest of the team consists of Alexander Lamley (Scotland and NY qualified) and Islam Abdelal (England and California qualified) covering corporate law, Danielle Prado (England and Texas qualified) covering US contract and data protection, and Olivia McLaren (New York attorney) covering US immigration.
